However you spell it (and there are umpteen variations), tonight is the first night of the Jewish Festival of lights. Chanukah (that's right, another spelling variation!) in short is a celebration of religious freedom. It is recognized for eight, consecutive nights. A candelabra called a Menorah is lit with more candles added each night. Festivities include celebrations with great food potato ltakes (pancakes) smothered with sour cream and apple sauce, and jelly donuts. A game called dreidle is played for candy. While many think that gifts are given each day, traditionally, children are given gelt (money) that is to be donated to charity. A miniature menorah with polymer clay candles, set for the first night, grace the lid (the center candle is the 'shamus," or helper candle used to light the others. Silver and gold glitter were used to cover Crystal Clay epoxy clay, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS flatback crystals were set in an alternating blue and clear pattern around the rim. The (Parawire) wire accents of a coiled Star of David and the twisted garland were made using an amazing new development in wire tools. My friend, incredibly talented artist/designer, and fellow SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Ambassador, Brenda Schweder invented what has to be the perfect wire jig, "Now That's a Jig". It has truly transformed how I twist, wrap and manipulate wire.
